Fear and Loathing in the Kitchen

When did you start your blog?
June, 2006

How did you come up with the name?
It had been floating around in my head for a few months as a book title, but decided to use it for my blog instead. At the time, I was battling what I thought was food addiction, so fear and loathing pretty much summed up how I was feeling about food and eating.

Does your blog have a specific focus or area of coverage?
It started out as an outlet for my frustration with trying to lose weight and my seeming addiction to food (all starchy carbs). Then I read about low-carbing and discovered I was gluten-intolerant, possibly celiac. Once I stopped eating gluten grains, all my addictive eating tendencies vanished – totally vanished (along with a host of other health issues that I’d thought were “normal”). Since then, the focus has been on low-carb/paleo and/or gluten-free eating, local eating, and the misinformation we’ve all been spoon-fed by mainstream media and, in many cases, the scientific community, about food and nutrition. Bashing the low-fat myth is not only fun but, since Gary Taubes’ book came out, it’s getting downright trendy! About time, too.

How did you come up with the name?
I was having lunch with a friend and we were eating empanadas when the topic of blogs came up. I jokingly said I should call my blog-to-be Jumbo Empanadas and the name just stuck.

Does your blog have a specific focus or area of coverage?
Not really. I definitely feature more sweet than savoury recipes on my blog, but I think mainly because they’re easier to photograph. I generally write about whatever I feel like on that particular day.

wasabicowgirl.jpgWe chat with Alana at Wasabi Cowgirl about her fun and entertaining food blog.

When did you start your blog?
April 2006

How did you come up with the name?
I had just moved to Toronto from the prairies (Edmonton, Alberta), so I was going for an “East meets West” thing. The cowgirl part is a nod to my home province.

Does your blog have a specific focus or area of coverage?
Not really. I write about whatever food-related thing is interesting to me on that particular day. Most of my posts are Toronto restaurant reviews, recipes, or about what I eat when I travel. One of my favourite things about travelling is trying out the “hidden gems” in new cities.

Food Blogger Profile - Cream Puffs in Venice

Posted by Sheryl Kirby in food blogger profile, on the web on January 27, 2008 at 9:26 am

creampuffs.jpgIn the first installment of our column on Toronto food bloggers, we talk with Ivonne of Cream Puffs in Venice.

When did you start your blog?
I started my blog in December 2005.

How did you come up with the name?
I had been thinking about starting a blog for awhile early in 2005, but couldn’t think of a name that I was happy with. That year I read Marlena De Blasi’s A Thousand Days in Venice. There are several accounts in the book of how the author and her husband would visit their favourite bakery and buy some espresso and some freshly baked pastries and then go enjoy them by the water. It occurred to me that I’d like to have that experience one day of enjoying a pastry in beautiful Venice. Because cream puffs are the first real pastries that I tried and learned how to make, I decided on the name Cream Puffs in Venice.
