What’s Cooking – Wednesday, December 2nd

cookingwednesdayHere's what's cooking around town today...

Everybody's singing the praises of Thomas Keller and the Ad Hoc cookbook - but should an iceberg lettuce salad really take 45 steps? [Globe and Mail]

What's that? You're having a Christmas party but can't be bothered to fuss with hors d'oeuvres? (No Thomas Keller fan, you, I guess...) Then stuff your guests full of pre-made heat and serve delights from the local supermarket chains.  (Yes, of course, I know that millions of people use the things. That still doesn't make them especially good. And your guests are still going to talk about your lack of effort on the way home.)[Toronto Sun]

Can Toronto stake a claim in the lexicon of bagels with a fancy twisted version? Our take on the issue - not until you start importing NYC water to boil them in. It doesn't matter what shape they are, Toronto can't make a bagel that tastes right. [Toronto Star]

I am welcoming and trustworthy - look, I have tea! People judge you by the temperature of the beverages you hold. [Sift, Dust & Toss]

Events for Winterlicious have been announced with tickets going on sale soon, although we're sceptical about the Twitter event to be held at Nyood. Although we often tweet food photos and comments from food events we attend, it's actually time consuming and not a lot of fun. The designated Twit (usually Greg since he's got an iPhone) tends to miss out on the conversation, and his food gets cold. [Toronto Star]

Speaking of iPhones, the iFood Assistant is the 2nd most downloaded paid lifestyle app in the US . It's a recipe source app that takes users from shopping list to prep to completed dish. Only problem is - it was created by Kraft (why are you buying food from a cigarette company?) and includes Kraft ingredients in every recipe. Sorry, try again.. [National Post: The Appetizer]

Arepa Café has been open a couple of weeks now and they've got some great shots of the food and action on their blog. Caution - hungry alert! [Arepa Cafe Blog]

Man make fire, man cook tasty meat! But many of us (man and woman) long for a backyard brick oven. [Food With Legs]
