What’s Cooking – Tuesday, December 1st

cookingtuesdayHere's what's cooking around town today...

When I grow up, I want to be a farmer. Canadian statistics seem to indicate that small local farms are dwindling as farmers grow old and retire with no one to replace them. However, statistics from the US reveal that the number of small farms is actually increasing - in some states as much as 80% from 2002 - 2007. Why is it so different in Canada? Or are we just looking at old statistics? [Dana McCauley's Food Blog]

Let them eat cake - turns out that if you're watching cooking shows where they make high-calorie treats like cake, you'll probably start craving cake. And will then eat cake. Lots of cake. mmmm... cake. [Toronto Sun]

The new cookbook by Linda Haynes of Ace Bakery is a hit and a perfect Christmas gift. [Cream Puffs in Venice]

Chef and cookbook author Thomas Keller wants home cooks to buy the best ingredients and equipment they can afford, learn how to cook classic items well, and not be afraid to touch the food they're cooking. [Toronto Star]

Spurtles at the ready people, as Elizabeth Baird offers an oatmeal tutorial, complete with seasonal recipes. [Canadian Living: Elizabeth Baird's Four Seasons of Canadian Food]

I hope our stats are old - I'd love nothing better than to see local farms expanding! Thanks for the link.

LeHeup's stats go to 2001, the ones I've linked to are from 2002 - 2007. A lot has changed in terms of our attitudes towards food and farming in that time, so yeah, there's the potential for things to have turned around.

Thanks for the link! I'm a big fan of the site - dying to try the bespoke bakery you reviewed earlier this week (even though they're probably poutine-free)!
