Here’s a round-up of the food & drink articles in Toronto’s papers today…
Globe & Mail:
- Joanne Kates heads up to Highway 61 where she enjoys the homey Southern-style fare, although she insists that the ribs are nowhere near as good as those prepared by JoJo the sous-chef at her family's summer camp.
- Beppi Crosariol reckons that with the recession now waning, it's time to start buying some pricey bottles again.
- Sebastien Centner must think we have waaaaay too much time on our hands, as he recommends making home-smoked salt.
- Lucy Waverman mashes up local seasonal produce and global cooking techniques for a unique set of recipes.
- Ben Mulroney and burgers may not be the most obvious combination, but apparently someone at CTVglobemedia thought it would be a good idea to get a CTV entertainment host to write an article for the Globe about some of the city's gourmet burger joints. Maybe next week, the National Post will send Rick Campanelli out for burritos!
National Post:
- Gina Mallet seems happy that the "resto-lounge" trend has matured to the point that some of them - including Cinq o1 - are serving decent food.
- Margaret Swaine is freshly returned from the Rhône Valley, and recommends three wines from over there that we can buy over here.
- Nathalie Atkinson kicks off a series of holiday gift guides with a selection of foodie finds from Good Egg in Kensington Market.
- Alison Broverman gets growing with Marie Larsson, owner of Toronto Sprouts.
- Meredith Erickson eats and eats and eats some more with Momofuku's David Chang and his cookbook co-author Peter Meehan during a whirlwind visit to Montreal.
- Joanne Sasvari talks to some experts on pairing wine and food, and also gets a bit more specific in matching wine with cheese.
- Bonnie Stern has a whirlwind visit of her own to New York City, and comes back with some new recipes.
Toronto Star:
- Amy Pataki has a very different experience to Ms. Mallet at Cinq o1 and gives it an accordingly negative review - although they both agree that the lamb chops are excellent.
- Gord Stimmell features five "food-friendly global wines that offer terrific value".
- Corey Mintz has coffee guru Duane Sorenson of Stumptown Coffee Roasters over for breakfast, along with Sorenson's assistants and a few of Toronto's top cafe owners.
- Jennifer Bain reports on the great work that executive director Paul Taylor and his team are doing at keeping the kids fed at Second Base, a shelter and drop-in centre for street youth.
- Shauna Rempel suggests adding some class to your holiday bash with the Layer Cake, an elegant layered cocktail made with brandy, creme de cacao and egg nog.
- Ben Rayner looks at some odd developments in the world of chicken wings, where supply and demand has forced the wholesale price so high that it's cheaper in some areas for restaurants to sell deep-fried strips of breast meat as "boneless chicken wings". Hardcore wing aficionados are understandably unimpressed.
