What’s Cooking – Monday, October 12th

cooking4Here's what's cooking around town today (and some from yesterday...). Yes, it's all from the Toronto Star; we're not Star cheerleaders (seriously what is up with the new website design... yuk!) but they've had some great food articles over the past few days, particularly the ongoing series by author Margaret Webb. Check out some of these between the turkey and the pie and find out more about where your food comes from. Happy Thanksgiving!

Soy and corn - they're in just about every processed food we eat, and our ongoing demand for cheap food means they're using up over half of the available farmland in Ontario. Imagine all the REAL food we could be enjoying if people didn't need soda pop and 99 cent hamburgers.

But people seem not to want real food, and even though we have to know it's not good for us, food reform will be a huge fight to get people to give up their cheap junk food.

And just when we need more healthy food, and more people learning about agriculture, the Canadian government is set to shut down a country-wide agricultural program for inmates.

In Scotland, the lethal diet is causing people to die young - why is this country importing so much food that they can and do grow themselves?

Salmonella be damned, people want to eat at Ruby Chinese Restaurant.

The food banks are short this season, in part because of the recession. And more clients mean a greater demand on strapped resources.

Your Mom always told you to eat your veggies - here's why you really, really should.

A history of the Daily Bread food bank, and why, despite organizer's best effort, it's still around.

And maybe we could shut down those food banks if social assistance actually gave people enough to live on.
