Here’s a round-up of the food & drink articles in Toronto’s papers today…
Toronto Star:
- Corey Mintz and "the lady" go to Montreal for a whirlwind weekend of eating and "a special hug that grown-ups do" (seriously, Corey - TMI!), with visits to Au Pied de Cochon (twice!), Reservoir, L'Express and other places. As expected from Mintz, it's a great read, but as we do when the Globe lets Joanne Kates file reviews from France or NYC, we have to give the Star some snark for not putting it in the Travel section.
- Gord Stimmell finds a lot of gems amongst the 89 wines featured in today's Vintages release.
- Linda Barnard does some analysis of the favourite cocktails of various characters on Mad Men, and gives a recipe for Betty Draper's Gimlet.
- Mark Bittman has a recipe for a summery fruit dessert that is sort of, but not quite, a pie.
- Brett Popplewell investigates why less than 1% of the bananas sold in Canada are fair trade.
Globe & Mail:
- Chris Johns is also in Montreal this week, with stops at DNA, Resident, and Muvbox, a temporary street food restaurant located in a disused shipping container. (Since The Globe is ostensibly "Canada's National Newspaper" rather than just a Toronto paper, we'll have to let it slide without any snark.)
- Beppi Crosariol rates a slew of Chilean wines.
- Sebastien Centner suggests some sweet-meets-savoury dishes.
- Lucy Waverman prepares for the Globe's Mediterranean Odyssey cruise with some recipes from Turkey.
- Davida Aronovitch compares the cold treats at Cold Stone Creamery and Marble Slab Creamery, two "mix-in" ice cream shop chains from the U.S. that have recently expanded into Toronto.
National Post:
- Gina Mallet is amazingly not in Montreal, but instead ventures to the Junction where she thoroughly enjoys the Indian delights at Curry Twist.
- Margaret Swaine chooses three white wines from today's Vintages release that show off the best of their respective grapes.
- Jon Bricker and Kate Swoger head to Richmond Hill and find what might be the GTA's best cha siu (aka Chinese-style BBQ pork) at John's Chinese BBQ Restaurant.
- Amy Rosen looks at the increasing popularity of customized dessert treats, from the aforementioned mix-in ice cream, to the bespoke cookies at Sweet Flour Bake Shop.
- Bonnie Stern is back from a trip to Newfoundland with a trio of delicious down home recipes.

Since The Globe is ostensibly "Canada's National Newspaper"
Shouldn't that also go for Kates?
The difference with Kates is that The Globe often publishes her reviews of restaurants OUTSIDE of Canada, such as France or NYC.
If The Globe wants her (or any other reviewer) to review places elsewhere in Canada, that's fine. They're supposed to be a national paper, after all. But any reviews of places outside of Canada should go in the Travel section, IMO.
Similarly, The Star is a Toronto paper, so I'd like to see their main reviews to be focused on the GTA, or at the furthest, southern Ontario. Any further, and it's a Travel story.
