One of the best things about the changing seasons for Toronto foodies is the arrival of a new issue of Edible Toronto around each solstice and equinox. The Summer issue of the free quarterly came out a couple of weeks ago, and it's jam-packed with the usual assortment of articles about the abundance of food and drink in the Golden Horseshoe. Selected highlights include:
- Mary Luz Mejia visits Château des Charmes winery.
- Lauren Carter takes a trip around Peterborough and the Kawarthas.
- Carmen Everest Wahl goes cherry picking at the E.D. Smith cherry farm in Winona.
- Fred Thompson gives some tips on grilling with gas, and Ted Reader shares some plank grilling recipes.
- Jenna Charlton profiles Laura Reinsborough and her community fruit harvesting organization Not Far From The Tree.
For these and many more articles, pick up a copy of the magazine at various spots around town, or check out the website where the entire issue is online.
Not yet online, however, is the August issue of Toronto Life. The paper version hit the shelves last week, and behind yet another busy and ugly TL cover, readers will find a bit of food content, including:
- Four pages of food & drink favourites in the annual "Best of the City" section, including Best Tacos (La Tortilleria), Best Beer (Mill Street Belgian Wit), Best Food Box (Kawartha Ecological Growers), and Best Macaroons (La Bamboche).
- Brent Preston gives a first-hand account of what it's like for a young family to leave the city and become small scale farmers.
- David Lawrason tries to rescue Chardonnay from its bad reputation.
- Stéphanie Verge visits Table 17, Watusi, Harbord Room and The Drake in search of the best bubbly cocktail in town.
