Zine Scene – June, 2009

torontolife200907It's a short column this month, as there are no new issues of City Bites or Edible Toronto to report on (although the summer issue of the latter should be out in a week or two), so we just have the July 2009 edition of Toronto Life to review. And as usual, most of the new issue isn't online yet, so we can't even provide handy links.

If you pick up a paper copy, however, you'll find the following food & drink related content:

  • Charles Foran profiles Luke Hayes-Alexander, the 15 year old cooking prodigy who is wowing foodies from far and wide with the creations he sends out of the kitchen at Lukes! in Kingston.
  • James Chatto looks at how the recession is affecting Toronto's restaurant scene. His conclusion (and headline): it's A Diner's Market.
  • David Lawrason suggests that the supposedly amazing 2007 vintage for Ontario wines may be a bit over-hyped, and it's the 2006s that drinkers really should be checking out.
  • Eric Vellend digs the Peruvian-Asian fusion at play in the char ceviche at Foxley.
  • Rachel Heinrichs gets us prepared for summer with a preview of five adult-oriented ice creams from Colborne Lane, Greg's, Xococava, Silver Spoon and Soma.
  • Denise Balkisson kills any hopes that Toronto's "underground restaurant" scene will remain underground for much longer with a chart comparing and contrasting Charlie's Burgers, Six Degrees and several others.
