Here's some food for thought for today...
- Perigee Chef Christopher Brown creates his own Kitchen Nightmares-style photo-op and promotion by handing out free canapes outside Union Station yesterday. With a 30% drop in business, the restaurant needs to get bums in seats in a bad way.
- Maybe Chef Brown needs to start handing out hugs - Frank Bruni notices that restaurants in NYC have sure gotten a lot friendlier recently, now that they need the business.
- Need an affordable luxury during tough times? - Why not go out to eat? (Seriously, go read the Perigee piece and then go out - anywhere with plates and cutlery would be fine.)
- There is no part of the phrase "self-monitored" that doesn't scare the crap out of me - veterinarians question new legislation that would allow slaughterhouses to do their own inspections. What's unbelievable is that the federal government is still pushing for this privatization at a time when it's obvious our meat industry needs more regulation, not less.
- "Turn on a TV anywhere in the world and you will see an idiot with a spoon." I don't always agree with the statements of Slow Food founder Carlo Petrini, but his perspective on how the western world views food is pretty insightful.
- Leftovers and condiments - what's in your fridge?
- And finally, a recap of a visit to a secret supper club.
