Here’s a round-up of the food & drink articles in Toronto’s papers today…
Globe & Mail:
- Joanne Kates returns from her annual summer sabbatical, and perhaps it's because she's been surviving on camp food since June, but she goes head-over-heels for the food at Nota Bene - although she's not quite so complementary of the service.
- Beppi Crosariol is keen on the new single-serve bottles from Aussie winery Hardys that come with a screw-top that doubles as a drinking glass. Plus, the wine is actually pretty good.
- Lucy Waverman cooks up a couple of recipes inspired by the food and wine scene of the Okanagan Valley.
- Nadja Sayej tries the pies at Pizzeria Libretto, the newest hot spot on Ossington, where the food is so authentic that it's certified by the Real Neapolitan Pizza Association.
- Cinda Chavich gets a sugar rush at the Pudding Club, a weekly gathering at a quaint hotel in the English countryside where people stuff themselves full of traditional British desserts.
Toronto Star:
- Corey Mintz checks out Debu's Nouvelle Indian Cuisine, the eagerly awaited new restaurant from chef Debu Saha (ex-Biryani House), where he finds a few flashes of brilliance, but they seem to be overshadowed by the overly complicated dishes and clashing flavour combinations.
- Gord Stimmell suggests five solid red wines to cellar for the cooler months ahead.
- Francine Kopun encourages you to have a (miniature) cow, man - assuming you live somewhere that it's allowed, of course.
- Mark Bittman finds that a light hand is the answer to cooking with lavender.
- Paul Irish visits the village of Neustadt, where the highlight is the Neustadt Springs Brewery.
- Richard Ouzounian has six meals in Oslo, Norway.
- Vicky Sanderson looks the revival of home canning and preserving, and some handy tools to help you make your own jams and sauces.
National Post:
- Gina Mallet's opinion of Canoe can be nicely summed up by her dining companion's keen observation: "This is a cafeteria for American Express cardholders."
- Margaret Swaine prefaces her weekly wine reviews with some praise for the restaurants of the Niagara wine region.
- Jason Chow shares chef Michael Smith's recipe for the ultimate mashed potatoes.
- Bonnie Stern has some tips and recipes to help parents deal with kids who are fussy eaters. (I guess the good ol' "finish your dinner or I'll whip your ass!!" approach isn't politically correct anymore...)
