Here's some food for thought for today...
- Yes, we have no bananas - hurricane season wrecks banana crops in Haiti.
- Will California pass a bill requiring calorie information on menus at restaurants? The Governator will decide.
- An effort is on to save "endangered foods" - species of fruit, vegetables and animals that fall out of favour because they produce lower yields, take too long to grow or cost too much to produce.
- From the "that's not really news" file - 54% of supermarket specials at stores in the UK are for sugary, fatty, processed food. I'd guess it's about the same here, based on the grocery store fliers I read.
- As prices soar, processed foods shrink in size and/or quantity, offering a double hit to anyone with an already-stretched food budget.
- And finally, what's a little botulism between friends? At this past weekend's Slow Food Nation in San Francisco, Slow Food founder Carlo Petrini demonstrates why Slow Food organizers are often seen as being out of touch with the common man by suggesting people scrape the mould or bad parts off the foods found in their fridge and eat it anyway, or perhaps hand it out to homeless people. uhhh... no.
