We're in the process of revamping our content here at TasteTO, and will have a variety of changes over the next few weeks including some great new columns and features, the return of some great older columns like Tasting T.O., and updates to our crazy-popular events page to make it more user-friendly.
The new Food For Thought column will appear daily, Monday to Friday, and will replace the Wide, Wide World of Web column that ran on Mondays. It will be a supplement to continuing columns What's Cooking, Rag Round-Up, In the Papers and T.O. Tidbits. We'll still be doing round-ups of food-related articles from other Toronto blogs and websites, but the plan is to be more selective in what we include, while supplementing the best, most interesting articles with links to great content at other, more general, food and drink sites. Our hope is that these links will genuinely provoke some 'food for thought" as we focus on the best food writing and reporting in Toronto and beyond.
Here's some Food For Thought for today...
- At Posted, Michael Schmidt headed to court yesterday on contempt of court charges regarding the selling of raw milk; Schmidt scored a victory when the judge pushed the court date back by 6 weeks and refused to enforce a cease and desist order.
- From the Toronto Star - Chef Gordon Ramsay's right-hand man Marcus Waring has jumped ship from the Ramsay empire.
- Eric Vellend explains kebabs at Menumental
- Noelle Munaretto of Gremolata checks out Toronto's best ice cream shops
- At the Foodie-file blog on the Canadian Living website, Christine is giving away copies of Delia Smith's cookbook. I suspect y'all are on your own when it comes to finding the cans of minced lamb, though.
- Kevin Yarr of CBC's Food Bytes bemoans the popularity of imported blueberries just weeks before the local season begins (Yarr is in PEI), but this piece from the Bellingham Herald in Washington State might explain why they're so prevalent, even on the other side of the continent - farmers are growing more of them.
- Culinate is reporting that in the US Wal-Mart is now trying to hop on the local food bandwagon as they did with organics last year.
- One of the best accounts from the restaurant server's POV is now a regular column at Serious Eats.
- "At least the chicken tastes like something!" The concern over chlorine bleach used in chicken processing at Serious Eats.
- And finally, in the WTF? category, Slate is reporting that Los Angeles has passed an ordinance prohibiting the construction of new fast-food outlets in poor neighbourhoods.
