Whatever You Do, Don’t Drop Your Fork!

Okay, I know I mentioned Dinner in the Sky in a round-up a month or so back, and at the time I was a bit sceptical of the whole concept. And I still am. But as it's never wise to pass judgement without knowledge, I've signed up to eat dinner next week at a table hanging from a crane 50 metres in the air.

And you can too!! (Edit: apparently the event is now fully booked.)

As part of Summerlicious, American Express is sponsoring the Canadian premiere of the Dinner in the Sky event on July 2nd and 3rd at Yonge-Dundas Square, and the public can join in for free. Sign up at the American Express website to book a seat for this truly unique dining experience.

Here's what I know - diners are strapped into seats at a 22-person oval-shaped table, with chefs and servers in the centre. You have to show ID and sign a waiver before they'll hoist you up. Your feet dangle - it's probably not a good idea to wear slip-on shoes. It's difficult to talk to the people beside you once the table is fully hoisted because of the wind. I suspect, but do not know for sure, that things like purses will be left on the ground, and that they won't set the table back down until the end of the dinner, so go pee beforehand.

My impression is that it will be very much like a sedate carnival ride (they set you back down gently, not like some sort of Drop Zone thing) where instead of losing your lunch, you get one instead.

No word in any of the press information I've come across on what the food is like, but I guess we'll see once we're up in the air.

And of course, it should go without saying that those with a fear of heights probably won't be interested in taking part.

This should be interesting, but my impression was that the event was already sold out?

    Hey Suresh,

Not to my knowledge. The press release I got didn't mention it being sold out, and I was asked to pass along the info to our readers.

Yeah just confirmed by calling one of the many Amex numbers for Dinner in the Sky. It's fully soldout...but you can hop on a cancellation 30 minutes prior to lift off. So if you really want to go and you dont have reservations, just hang out at the square all day.

I hope you guys are videoblogging this because I want more than just pics!

Heh. I've got to figure out how to upload video files then, huh? I'm such a Luddite.

    Oh Sheryl,
You'd probably want to wear pants too (i.e. change of post title - Whatever you do, don't wear a skirt!). Who knows what wind may blow or who might be below looking up to see what's going on... Eeeks.

    Renee,

Hahaha!! You're absolutely right. Things could get a little revealing in a good breeze, couldn't they?

I'm jealous! By the time I got through, all I heard was "This program is now closed". Bummer!
