The cover story at Eye this week is a brilliant piece by Edward Keenan on young Toronto chefs. Interviewing relative youngsters like Ted Corrado of C5 and Roger Mooking of recently-opened Nyood, Keenan explores how these chefs (who are mostly Toronto born and raised) are influenced by the multicultural city in which they live and work. There's also an "honour roll" of Toronto's best young chefs with what appears to be quotes from recent reviews.
I'm saddened to see that local restaurant critics are not enjoying Four as much as I did. Steven Davey at NOW joins the dissenting voices with a review of the place this week, where he finds the portions small and spendy. Like everyone, he seems to have enjoyed the desserts. Also at NOW, Graham Duncan enjoys the offerings at Simply Zoup, and offers an odd review of the Sgt. Major India Pale Ale.
At Metro, Billy Munnelly looks at the quality of Italian wines, and Chris Atchinson has a profile of Eight Wine Bar. Atchinson also has a review of Tom Jones Steakhouse, which has been in that lovely building on Leader Lane for 32 years, as well as a profile on the bar aspect (little mention of the food) of Harlem on Richmond Street. Rick McGinnis rides the escalator waaay up to the 8th floor of the Bay to check out Great Cooks on Eight. There's also an AP wire piece on low-fat fondue, and the celebrity foodie interview this week is Wendel Clark.
