newsboy.jpgThings seem a little dim for Steven Davey of NOW this week when he has to borrow a flashlight from a server at Delux to read the menu. Having some wacky eyesight myself, I'll be the first to pipe in and declare that many restaurants need to up the dimmer switch a bit. Davey finds the food astounding despite not being able to see it very well, however. He also checks out the grub at take-out spot Aunti Pasti on Dupont. Meahwhile, Graham Duncan scores a bottle of a hard-to-find Niagara Reisling.

Corey Mintz of Eye drops by Satori Supper Club this week and sums up the place in one perfectly skewering paragraph:

Satori is a Japanese Buddhist term for enlightenment. Not the short-term glimpse at the true nature of existence (that’s “kensho”), but a deeper, long-term, lasting, RRSP-type investment in metaphysical awakening. On Queen West, it also means that we’re asked to arrive early and warned that our table will only be held for 15 minutes. It’s a loose, modern translation of enlightenment: one that allows for animal print upholstery and dinner tables pulled aside at 10:30pm to make way for the dancefloor. We can’t see any Buddhist monks at the bar. Maybe they’re in the bathroom.

He has praise enough for Chef Scott McDonough's work, but concludes that McDonough is likely being held back by overly-involved management.

At Metro Sandy Caetano advises loading up on Vitamin C to stave off cold and flu viruses,  and there's a condensed version of the potato article that ran in yesterday's Toronto Star, along with a celebrity interview with East Coast actress Holly Dignard who admits to loving the spuds (it's a rule in the Maritimes, they kick you out if you won't eat potatoes).

There's also a Canadian Press article about a baker in Montreal who makes housecalls via her new cookbook, another TorStar piece about getting kids involved in the kitchen, and another CP article about allowing kids to have wine. And speaking of wine, Billy Munnelly continues his series on local wines, with a cab/merlot from Colio Winery.
