It looks like French bistros are set to push tapas out of top spot as the new dining trend, if the number that have opened in the past few months are any indication. At Eye, Alan A. Vernon and Sean Kelly Keenan visit Pop Bistro, and recommend some French (cooking) lessons for the place.
Crab cakes ($10) fare even worse: four tiny, inexplicably orange disks are mostly filler and taste like burning. Dim lighting does indeed add a nice atmospheric touch, but it does little to conceal the fact that these cakes are encased in carbon.
(Yeah, I'm always a sucker for a Simpsons reference). From the sounds of it, only dessert was worth the visit.
Over at NOW, Steven Davey enjoys a tasty tangle (nice alliteration) of pad thai at Mengrai, a Thai place that even inspires him to use the A-word (authentic!). Davey's also got a preview of Winterlicious, while Graham Duncan finds a very nice Pinot Noir from Greece.
Metro is running a Reuters piece on cloned meat, something that will be in the news more and more in upcoming months. Rick McGinnis reviews Bottom Line Steakhouse, and Chris Atchison profiles Jamie Kennedy Wine Bar with compliments to the sommelier for a great selection.
