What’s Cooking - Wednesday, January 2nd

whats_cooking1.jpgWhat will we be eating and drinking in 2008? Beppi Crosariol at the Globe and Mail lists his predictions for the new year with trends such as English food, specific ethnic cuisines and - sweet merciful crap, say it isn’t so - home versions of sous vide cooking. Because botulism is even tastier when you cook it up in your own kitchen. Come on - there’s a reason this process is banned in many places. Crosariol’s also got drink trends for the coming year.

And speaking of those specific ethnic cuisines, Jennifer Bain of the Toronto Star is ahead of the trend, visiting three Toronto-based Colombian bakeries.

Also in the Star, Susan Sampson checks out sweeteners and probiotic yogurt (now there’s  foodie trend I’d like to see the last of) in her In Store column, Gordon Stimmell recommends some great, reasonably priced wines for the new year, and Josh Rubin checks out the John By stout (note - there is some discussion in beer circles that the alcohol content might be higher than the listed 6.7%. Having had one last week that threw me for a loop, I’d warn drinkers of this tasty brew to proceed with caution).

Over at the Toronto Sun, Elizabeth Baird recaps her favourite recipes of 2007.
