What’s Cooking - Wednesday, December 26th

whats_cooking1.jpgIt’s that time of year - round-up time - where everyone, particularly in the media, looks back at the year that was. Over at the Toronto Star, Susan Sampson and Jennifer Bain hand out the “Golden Whisk Awards” where they select their favourite recipes of 2007. Gordon Stimmell joins the round-up fun with his best bottles of 2007.

Also at the Star, Josh Rubin recommends Mill Street’s barley wine for New Year’s eve sipping,  there’s info about Emeril Lagasse’s break with the Food Network, news about that chemical in microwave popcorn, and some new product reviews in In Store.

At the Toronto Sun, Rita DeMontis previews some new shows on the Food Network, and offers up tips on quick, last minute party food, while Elizabeth Baird has the inevitable list of ideas for turkey leftovers.

The careful - or the paranoid, depending on your point of view - are the subject of the lead story in the food section of the Globe and Mail, which discusses various gadgets available to track spoilage and doneness in foods. More paranoia abounds in Leslie Beck’s list of the  nutrition trends of 2007, particularly the last item that continues to link obesity with cancer. I thought we were over that. And finally, an article about food that doesn’t predict our imminent doom - Chef Michael Smith offers up a recipe for spiced cider.
