What’s Cooking - Wednesday, December 19th

whats_cooking1.jpgOh, the Christmas pud - the key player in the age-old holiday tradition of putting even more food into your face when you're already well and truly stuffed. Greg Gormick of the Toronto Star looks at VIA Rail's plum pudding revival. Jennifer Bain has the official recipe, as well as the advice, "And don't let a tiny bit of suet (once a year) upset you." I suspect Bain will be getting heaps of coal in her stocking from vegetarians and Hindus.

Bain's also got a recipe for brussels sprouts, another of those holiday must-haves, while Susan Sampson is in charge of the shortbread - both sweet and savoury. Sampson's also got some tasty coffee recipes for Christmas morn, and squeeze jam to keep the kids occupied during breakfast. Meanwhile, Josh Rubin has found the real meaning of the holidays in a bottle of Schneider Aventinus Eisbock.

At the Toronto Sun, Joanne Richard is cooking up chocolate fudge cake with Grand Marnier, Rita DeMontis suggests lobster in place of Christmas turkey (well, twist my arm!), and also visits International Cheese.

Beppi Crosariol of the Globe and Mail interviews an Indian chef in London England determined to save Indian food from western bastardization. Adele Hagan has troubleshooting tips for holiday kitchen mishaps, Rob Feenie braises some lamb, and Alexandra Gil reviews a sports bar in Vancouver in which she uses the term "puck bunnies" - which I'm assuming is just a polite term for "hockey whores".
