whats_cooking1.jpgApples! Jennifer Bain of the Toronto Star celebrates the wonderful world of apples this week, with a focus on Honeycrisps and lots of apple recipes. Meanwhile Amy Pataki explores sofrito with related recipes, Josh Rubin checks out the Ontario Craft Brewers discovery pack, which is meant for regular folks so they can try new stuff, not beer geeks, and Susan Sampson reviews Fierce Food.

At the Toronto Sun, Joanne Richard explores the fascinating history of gingerbread men… er, people. And Elizabeth Baird gets creative with Rice Krispie Squares ( not just in square shape anymore), and offers a bunch of fun holiday foodie suggestions, like the steaming hot blueberry cup. oh… yum!

We always though that getting food for Christmas was a cool gift, but now it’s confirmed. Beppi Crosariol of the Globe and Mail looks at the popularity of foodie gifts, with suggestions for mail-order companies provided by staff writers.

Also in the Globe, Vikram Vij looks at the modernization of ethnic cuisines, Alexandra Gill reviews Vancouver’s Plan B Lounge and Eatery, and Beppi Crosariol looks at the pros and cons of really big bottles.
