For the past couple of weeks, it's been hard to avoid reading or hearing about Nuit Blanche, the "free all-night contemporary art thing" that's taking place at around 200 different venues throughout the city this weekend from 7:03pm on Saturday to sunrise on Sunday. While it's a pretty cool and impressive event that is expected to entertain hundreds of thousands of people, we haven't given it much (well... any) coverage on Taste T.O., mainly due to the fact that there's not a lot of food and/or drink related activity happening as part of the festivities.

However, there are three installations/exhibits/happenings that do feature food in some context, and we thought we'd list them just so we're not the only media outlet in the city that doesn't give Nuit Blanche at least a passing mention.

Midnight Mirage, 2007
Vessna Perunovich
(Performance art, video installation)
Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School (parking lot), 60 McCaul Street
For the duration of the event the artist will be serving a humble Serbian "bread & bean" dish to a circulating 12-member audience in an effort to stimulate cultural and social exchange. An all-night ritual of food consumption and conversation.

Black Night
Mike Murphy, Curator
The Kitchen at St. Lawrence Market, 93 Front St. E.
Black Night is an examination of the darkness associated with nighttime. This vision will be explored through cuisine, audio, light installation and music. The St. Lawrence Market will be seen in a very different light. Suitable for audiences 10+.

Abomasum
Rachel E McRae
(Installation, performance art, sculpture)
Gates of Trinity Bellwoods Park, 791 Queen Street West
Within the woods, there shall be a feast. At 2am a forest creature, a chocolate stag, will be offered to citizens of this city at the mediation point between nature and culture. Eat, gorge and be merry.

Of course, wandering the city for 12 overnight hours is hungry and thirsty work, so thankfully plenty of bars and restaurants will be staying open late, with some places having liquor license extensions until 4am. There will also be snacks and coffee served at the three main Nuit Blanche "hubs", courtesy of various corporate sponsors. Check the Nuit Blanche website for more info, as well as the handy "Nuit Blanche Noshing" and "Bar Hopping" listings in this week's NOW.
