Avast ye mateys, Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day! We've got a treasure of victuals from the galley for you scurvy rogues...
Oddly, none of the food columns today picked up on the pirate theme, imagine that. Not even a recommendation to drink more orange juice to ward off scurvy.
Instead, Rita DeMontis of the Toronto Sun interviews Sylvia Bielak about her kosher food company, and offers up an explanation of exactly what "kosher" means. DeMontis also has a preview of next week's Eat to the Beat event put on by Willow Breast Cancer Support.
At the Toronto Star, Jennifer Bain raises a pinkie finger in salute to the Great Canadian Tea Steep-Off. Bain's also got high praise for a cookbook about grains with a really long title, and a couple of recipes for Mexican Quinoa and Kasha with Miso.
And other than Doug Cook's positive review of something called Squiggles (I don't even want to know), the rest of the Star's food section is also liquid-themed, with sticky sauce, a review by Tamsyn Burgmann of Pho Mi 99, featuring - of course - the pho soup, and a round-up of new products by Susan Sampson, also heavy on the beverages. Josh Rubin reviews great Lakes Brewing Co.'s Devil's Pale Ale. Not a word about rumrunners, though. Yarr!
The Globe and Mail has an article that any pirate worth his weight in treasure could get into - a chowder competition in PEI. I'm drooling all over my keyboard. Chef Rob Feenie offers up a corn and crab chowder as well. Jeff Gray, Karen Howlett and Shawn McCarthy report on what kinds of snacks Provincial leadership candidates have on their bus. Uhh... okaaaay. Finally, Beppi Crosariol explores the wines of Brazil. Yes, they have wine in Brazil, cool, huh? And probably treasure. Yarr!
