What’s Cooking - Wednesday, August 29th

whats_cooking1.jpgLess than a week, kiddies! Mwahaha! And then it’s back to school for you! Over at the Toronto Sun, Joanne Richard is preemptively planning school lunches with a piece on how to ensure your kids get a balanced lunch and avoid lunchbox letdown. Also in the Sun, Elizabeth Baird celebrates the oft-overlooked August pear.

Yes, there are fans of Bosc, and yes, they are crisp. Some people can even smile when they think of Anjou. I can’t. For taste, go for locally grown Bartletts.

Well said!

At The Globe and Mail, Wendy Leung reports that Vancouver is hopping off the fusion train, with chefs there eschewing kooky flavour combinations in favour of homey and simple bistro fare. Chef Massimo Capra talks tomatoes and share a recipe for pasta with tomatoes and basil.

Soon Dobu. No, I’d never heard of it either, but Tamsyn Burgmann of The Toronto Star explores the wonderful world of Korean food and has us all craving this tofu-based stew. There’s also a handy list of Korean restaurants that serve it, and a recipe to try at home.

Also in the Star, Jennifer Bain visits the new T&T store in the portlands (someone please email me and tell me when the crowds have died down - I have a panic attack just thinking about it!), and offers a recipe for silkie (black) chicken. There’s also a recommendation for PC’s new burger buns, SummerFresh’s Snack and Go (hummus and pita), and recipes for potato skins, spinach pizza, and… oh MY… dulce de leche ice cream pie. And finally, Gordon Stimmell looks at a French winemaker who is branching out into other regions with some fun wines.

  1. Irene Says:

    Hi Sheryl,

I went to the new T&T this past Monday around 6pm, and there was tons of parking available, and the store wasn’t packed like sardines. I walked through without crashing carts with anyone else, and the prepared food section wasn’t manical either. I guess the key is not to go on the weekend then.

    Hey Irene,

Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I’ll venture down there on a Tuesday morning when it’s nice and quiet.

    Cheers!
