It's another relatively quiet week for food news & reviews in the Saturday papers. Amy Pataki is still on a break from the Toronto Star, and they haven't hired a replacement for Marion Kane yet. Gina Mallet doesn't have a review in the National Post this week, although she does have a piece on restaurant gardens. And the Globe & Mail's Cheap Eats summer review series is in Vancouver this week.
So, let's get through things quickly, shall we?
Star:
- Gordon Stimmell rates five reasonably priced wines from the latest Vintages release - and once again, the reviews are missing from the online version of the article.
- Jennifer Conlin profiles Mario Batali in a piece from the New York Times wire service.
- Megan Ogilvie decodes the Snack Factor Diet.
- Antonia Zerbisias looks at a multitude of dietary issues and related food scams.
Globe:
- Rebecca Caldwell profiles four of Toronto's newest indie coffee shops in a feature that doesn't seem to be online.
- Sasha Chapman picks peaches.
- Beppi Crosariol looks ahead to next week's Vintage's Pinot Noir release, and also recommends a few recently released bottles.
- Alexandria Gill reviews Gyoza King in Vancouver.
- Lacy Waverman whips up an Asian-themed menu.
Post:
- Gina Mallet checks out the veggie & herb gardens being grown by chefs all over the city, including those at the CN Tower, George, the Royal York, Cowbell and the Black Dog Pub.
- Adam McDowell asks chef Nathan Isberg (Czehoski and Coca) about what he like to see & do in Toronto.
- Laura Lind digs up the dirt about a coffee shop showdown on Roncesvalles.
- Michael Vaughan suggests some Spanish wines, and also looks forward to a few things in next week's Vintages release.
- A. Brouwer & A. Wilson convene a tasting panel to eat and rate a whole bunch of peanut butter.
- Bonnie Stern makes meatballs.
