Toronto blogs were still discussing the Beer Festival this past week. Torontoist posted the results of a taste-test, while BlogTO has a recap of the event in photos - oh, look... drunk people. Aren't they classy? Now I remember why I went on Thursday night - hardly any drunk people.
BlogTO also has the goods on a BBQ hosted by NDP MP Jack Layton promoting the 100-mile diet as an environmentally superior approach. Of course, if Jack wanted to score real environmental points, those would be veggie dogs he was grilling up, but that's not gonna win him votes in Alberta. But then again - is there anything that will score the NDP votes in Alberta? Jack would have better luck laying off the BBQ and courting the vegetarians who know that cows and pigs are pretty bad for the environment no matter how far away they are. BlogTO also has reviews of The Sweet Gallery and Mother's Dumplings.
Metroblogging Toronto looks at The Taste of the Danforth and the huge amount of garbage generated by this and similar events. At Beyond Burgers, Catherine Jheon checks out Magic Oven.
The "Local" this week at Eye is the newly-opened Parkdale Drink. And while I commend Eye on their timely review, a place that has only been open a week and doesn't even have bar stools yet can hardly be considered anyone's "local". I live a block away and haven't been in yet, so let's allow the actual locals some time to determine if it's better than the long-standing neighbourhood establishments like the Caddy and Rhino. Because until it's got "local" approval, it's just another swank bar full of hipsters brave enough to travel under the bridge.
Food gets political this week at Gremolata where MP Michael Chong and Senator Hugh Segal discuss the benefits of a local-labelling system so people buying produce can determine where their food is coming from. Also, Carlos Fuenmayor matches food with various sherries (What? No "Fine Old Canadian Cream"??), and Malcolm Jolley celebrates beans with a reprise of a post from last year.
And finally, James Chatto of Toronto Life sets aside the food talk for this week to sing the praises of recently departed Richard Bradshaw of the Canadian Opera Company.
