Between Marion Kane's recent departure and Amy Pataki's summer break, food coverage in the Toronto Star has become pretty light recently. The main food content in today's Living section is an article on barbecued fish taken from the LA Times wire service. Hopefully, things will pick up again in September.
Also in the Star:
- Gord Stimmell reviews five solid Chilean wines from today's Vintages release - although web gremlins have struck again, causing the reviews to disappear from the online version of the article.
- Susan Sampson suggests sorrel soup.
- Derick Chetty profiles the latest shop for people that have more money than brains, The WaterShoppe on the Danforth, where you can spend up to 12 bucks for a bottle of H20.
- In the main news section, Bill Schiller reports on the growing problem of counterfeit and knock-off versions of Ontario icewines being sold in China.
- In the Condos section, Cristina da Silva chats with Denis Allman, an expert in growing corn on urban patios.
- In the Travel section, Heather Greenwood Davis heads to South Beach, Florida and chats with chef Govind Armstrong of Table 8.
Over in the National Post, Gina Mallet visits the food courts (or as they now prefer to be known, "food halls") below several downtown towers to see what today's more health-minded office workers are eating. Salads are a big trend, as evidenced by spots like Lettuce Eatery and Fast Fresh Food, but burgers remain popular as well, ranging from old stand-bys like McDonald's to gourmet options such as Hero Certified Burgers.
Also in the Post:
- Jon Bricker and Kate Swoger enjoy the ever-popular meat-on-a-stick at East York's Bamiyan Kabob.
- Michael Vaughan is disappointed by the lack of range and depth in today's Chile-themed Vintages release.
- Jason Chow previews harvest festivals celebrating corn, watermelons, carrots and beans that will be taking place in small towns throughout Ontario over the next couple of weeks.
- Bonnie Stern gives recipes from a meal she was recently served by John Higgins, director of the George Brown College Chef School.
- Amoryn Engel re-caps the Niagara Wine Auction and Gala, a weekend-long event in Niagara-on-the-Lake featuring celebrity performers like Dan Aykroyd and Taylor Hicks that raised more than $300,000 for children's hospital charities.
In the Globe & Mail, the summer review series Cheap Eats is back in Toronto - or more accurately, Scarborough - where Liz Allemang is quite happy with the West Indian delights at Kammy's Roti Hut.
Also in the Globe:
- Beppi Crosariol proves that not all wines with trendy labels are plonk, as he quite likes a pair of wines from Italy's Fabiano that recently got a makeover courtesy of Toronto's Fish Out Of Water Design.
- Sasha Chapman discovers that you can get fresh local edamame if you know where to look for it.
- Lucy Waverman finally catches up with every other food columnist in the world and shares her recipe for ratatouille. Hopefully, this will be the last one we see, at least until the DVD comes out.
