Rag Round-Up - Thursday, July 26th

newsboy.jpgGood, but underwhelming is the critique of C5 from Eye's Alan A. Vernon and Ryan Jennings. They find the space to be modern but like any other "upscale eatery du jour". The food gets better marks but they find the mains over-salted and desserts uneven.

At Metro, Billy Munnelly sings the praises of rosé, pointing out that it's a nice summer wine that goes well with summer staples like cold meat platters, crusty bread, olive oil and tomatoes.

Also in Metro, Sandy Caetano disproves the saying "You don't make friends with salad," in an interview with Lettuce Eatery owner Matthew Corrin. Jennifer Yang looks at the many flavours and varieties of store-bought hummus. And just when it looked like we had a healthy vegetarian theme going, Yang also looks at bison and how the meat is healthier than beef. But... they're so cute! Rick McGinnis reviews Casa Manila and looks at the various cultural influences on Filipino cuisine.

At NOW, there seems to be southeast-Asian influence this week with a couple of pieces on Indian food. Steven Davey visits Indus Junction, but can't seem to get past the fact that the food is not spiced hot enough to singe his nosehairs (it's North Indian cuisine - it's not supposed to be hot), or that the plating is a bit more sophisticated than the typical pile o' rice and curry you get from the average buffet. Graham Duncan does hit the buffet at Skylark on Gerrard, singing the praises of all-you-can-eat. Duncan also reviews two reds and... Coors Light(??) in his Drink Up column. You can't say the man's not dedicated.
