Beans, Greens and Pristine Tomatoes

It was a busy day down at the Distillery District on Sunday with the Nissan Toronto Ten-Miler and 5K race going on. Wading through the runners, I finally made it to the Farmer’s Market and found it pleasantly calm.
I’ve been counting down the days to see tomatoes in their prime, so it was exciting to see some gorgeous, ripe specimens at Vanharts All Organic. I snatched up a box for $3, with visions of caprese salads and no-cook pasta sauces dancing in my head.
Next stop was Haystrom Farms (from Pickton), where there were three different greens on offer. Although the vendor couldn’t tell me what types of leaf lettuce were in each pot, he encouraged me to tear off a leaf and try each one. I took two of the varieties (for $3) and a box of green beans.
There was an impressive list of goat cheeses from Mariposa Dairy at Alli’s Bakery stand, including blueberry and cracked black pepper varieties, but I had a craving for the dill. With stash in hand, I tore back into the crowds and biked away. I’ll definitely be checking out this market again - not only is it at a convenient day and time for nine to fivers, the selection of produce is stellar and the location is a nice change of scenery from the clustered city streets.
