Rag Round-Up - Thursday, July 12th

newsboy.jpgSteven Davey of NOW follows the trend east and pays a visit to Citizen, the newly opened restaurant on Queen East. Perhaps his visit was too soon after opening for he finds a number of things to be uneven - hopefully this wrinkles will be ironed out in coming weeks once the place gets on a more even keel.

Davey's also got another instalment of Fresh Dish with a couple of closings and an amusing bit about how the soon-to-be-opened "Booze Emporium" was forced to change their name by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission. The new moniker - Prohibition. Ha!

Also in NOW, Graham Duncan's got a couple of whites and one of those vodkas that looks like it comes in a perfume bottle.

At Eye, Edward Keenan heads to the wild, wild west (okay, The Junction) to taunt his cholesterol rating with visits to two newly opened grills; Black Jack Grill and the Purple Onion Steakhouse and Grill.

The food at both Purple Onion and Black Jack is pretty standard – well put together, honest and greasy. No one's going to have their horizons expanded and vegetarians may explode on entry. But these great neighbourhood diners are a throwback. Better yet, their prices are a throwback, too.

At Metro, Billy Munnelly sings the praises of Goats Do Roam, while Aonghus Kealy attends a tasting of rare and strong beers and looks at how to track down the stuff you can't find at the LCBO (well... you private order it through the LCBO - yay, red tape).

Elsewhere in Metro, tea is good for you. No word on how much tea you have to drink to actually get those antioxidant benefits, or if there are any side effects to consuming the quantity you'll need to benefit from the stuff, but tea importers across the country have all turned into cartoon characters from a Richie Rich comic with dollar signs for eyes.

If tea is not your cuppa, there's always cocktails, and Metro previews the Drinks Show taking place at the Brickworks this weekend. I'm gonna sit this one out and stay home with my bottle of Hendrick's gin and leave this one for the young whippersnappers with a stronger constitution and someone to hold their hair back for them.
