Cheap and Cheerful Turkish Fare

Wraps for two with all taxes and tip: $12

I was hungry for something quick and cheap, so I decided to swing by A La Turque. It’s right around the corner from my place and I’d been meaning to check it out for a while now.

Waliking into A La Turque reads a bit like an advertisement for Turkey tourism. The posters lining the wall are reminiscent of something you might see at a travel agent’s office. The place is rather tiny with the food counter up front and five or six tables at the back with ten or so chairs available, if you choose to eat there.

The presence of any sort of traditional menu is suspiciously absent. There are a few pictures of the meals on the outside window and a few pictures of other meals on the inside above the cook tops, but no prices and no other food list.

turquewrap2.jpgOddness aside, I decided I was in a beefy mood, so I ordered a Beef Doner Wrap from the cheerful and friendly guy behind the counter. It was about five bucks. I’m not exactly sure what it was before tax, the guy just rang it in and asked for my money. I handed him a five dollar bill and got a few cents back. There is also Chicken Doner Wrap, which my friend ordered. The chicken and beef wraps are also available in meal form with rice and salad.

When I got my little silver-wrapped package to a suitable eating area, I unwrapped a nasty mess. These wraps don’t exactly wrap well; it was a little too stuffed. And for some reason the guy who made it just smeared hummus at the top and bottom, which just added to the mess. I wasn’t expecting it to be easy to eat, so I did the best I could to take my first bite.

All the veggies in the wrap were crunchy, fresh and crisp. The beef was tender and tasty, but it was a little on the cold side. Despite it being a little cold, they definitely didn’t cheap on it, there was lots of beef in that wrap. It would’ve been a more pleasant meal if it was a little warmer, but still quite good.

A La Turque isn’t worth a trip across town or anything, but for anyone near Church and Wellesley looking for a quick and cheap eat, this place is worth considering.
