Blog-A-Log - Sunday, July 8th

blog5.jpgWell, it's Indy weekend and pretty much all of downtown is filled with the drone of big fast cars whipping around a track and spewing out pollution. For us poor sods in Parkdale, Indy weekend is just about as tormenting as the CNE air show in terms of noise and bad air.

The observant among you will notice that ol' Sheryl is back doing the Blog-A-Log instead of Melissa, who is preparing for an upcoming move, possibly out of country. No matter where she ends up, we're going to miss her.

As my reason for passing the torch to Melissa was that this column took a long time to write in the old format of including every single post by every single Toronto food blogger, I'm going to be sticking with the new formula of choosing four or five posts that really resonated with me instead of including every one. I know that it's a bit disappointing to folks when they're not included every week, but the old format literally took two or three hours to write and was just exhausting. Remember bloggers that your blogs are still linked from our Links page, and if you're not included there, drop me a line and we'll add you.

And without further ado, here's what rocked my RSS feed this week...

Because I am a sucker for cupcakes, Alana at Wasabi Cowgirl gets the top spot this week with her recipe for carrot cupcakes with maple cream cheese icing. Drool!

Equally high on my drool scale is the coconut dulce de leche ice cream Brilynn whips up at Jumbo Empanadas.

At Recipes For Trouble, Marusya has a cherry-themed party featuring cherries from her backyard.

Tracey is managing eating locally quite well over at Fear and Loathing in the Kitchen, but she wisely recognizes that giving up all the tasty non-local stuff like tea and olive oil and coconut milk might not be especially practical.

And finally, still on the issue of local food, Gina Mallet waxes philosophical about June strawberries.

This to me is the true nightmare of free and global trade which has now made January strawberry month as much as June. I don't want to eat strawberries in January. I'd like to go back to the time when the seasons meant something. When I lived in Southern California I never got over its seasonlessness and I remember how happy I was to feel the pinch of fall as I came east.

But now we're all seasonless --- in the worst way. We no longer look forward to strawberries in June and raspberries in July and peaches in August and apples in the fall because they are with us all the time so they've become a bore.

Can I have said that -- a strawberry is a bore?

And that's exactly why we need to be more in tune with eating seasonally and locally. Because berries should never be boring.
