Rag Round-Up - Thursday, July 5th

I wondered when people would stop cooing over the restaurants at the new ROM Vinyl Crystal, and would come out with the straight goods on the place. Leave it to Steven Davey to tell it like it is in the most recent issue of NOW. He visits what sounds like a pretty mediocre cafeteria set-up where he finds the lemonade and the off-site cakes (Dufflet’s) to be the best things in the place.
Davey’s also got another Fresh Dish column this week with news of openings and closings.
Also in NOW, Graham Duncan reviews Yu Shan Dumpling House, and offers a couple of whites and a tequila in his drink picks for the week.
At Metro, Aonghus Kealy checks out some wheat, weit and weiss beers. Plus Jennifer Yang’s got some tips for eating locally and seasonally, and Rick McGinnis interviews chef Dean Guerreiro, of Six Steps about Summerlicious:
Guerreiro is refreshingly frank about the reputation Summerlicious has in the business. “People I’ve worked with who’ve done Summerlicious are against it,” he says. “From the front of the house you don’t get tipped properly, nobody orders wine … from that point of view it’s not that great. From the kitchen point of view, you’re showcasing the restaurant, but realistically the food you serve during Summerlicious and during the other nine months of the year are two different things. One is based on price, whereas when you’re serving your own food, it’s quality.”
At Eye, well, at Eye, the don’t have their website updated as of this writing, so I’ll just tell you that Edward Keenan visits Stonegrill on Winchester and is unimpressed with the stuff coming out of the kitchen. The spendy bits of meat he cooks himself on the Australian lava rock are mighty tasty, but the kitchen needs some work.
