Hi Nick,

That sounds like something you should really take up with Udupi Palace management. I know you've posted your comment here because you really just need to rant and the overlords at Chowhound have cut you off, but I can't really tell you why you got crappy service. I've never seen it happen any time I've been there; either for mixed couples, groups of all females or for goofy Caucasians such as myself. The service I've witnessed (for myself and other patrons when I've been there) has *always* been exemplary, often to the point of being overbearing, so I can't explain why you got the cold shoulder.

Again, I think you should contact the restaurant and talk to the manager if you think it's an issue, because at this point it seems as if you're making assumptions based on a perceived prejudice and that strikes me as a bit unfair - to both the restaurant and its staff and to your relationship.

I have to disagree on the whole "treated like a king" thing. My girlfriend and I stopped in for lunch this afternoon and our experience was worlds away from that. The "battalion of servers" was in place and the "banquet hall" was more than half empty but that didn't do us much good. Even when we made direct eye contact (which we did at least five times with several different waiters), the waiters just looked right through us and walked right by. Since every other table in the restaurant was being served with no problem (even with half the waiters just standing around talking) and you're not the only person to describe the service there as being attentive and good, it seems very likely to me that this had something to do with with the fact that my girlfriend is South Asian and I'm not. It seems even more likely to me when the only other negative comment I've seen on their service is someone saying that they were "all but ignored on several occasions when we were females only at the table".

Needless to say, this was more than a little unpleasant and it ruined a good part of our day. For some reason my post about this on Chowhound was deleted but I'd like to know whether this was just a fluke or whether we (and other similar couples) should look elsewhere for our dosas.
