The annual “Summer Fun” issue of Toronto Life is on the shelves, and apparently, the proper way to have Fun this Summer involves buying thong sandals for $650, a patio umbrella for $2100, and a barbeque for $8000. So get out there and start spending money you don’t have on crap you don’t need! You want to have Fun this Summer, don’t you?!?
In a slightly more realistic price range, they also recommend some ideal hot weather dishes from some of Toronto’s top dining destinations, including a raw scallop creation at Colborne Lane, gooseberry gazpacho at Torito, cold lobster soup at George, dill noodles at Susur, and watermelon salad at Truffles. And three soon-to-open spots - Bar Crudo, The Ossington and One - are given some preview coverage.
Also in this month’s issue:
- One of our favourite new restaurants, Indus Junction, gets a nice write-up on the Preview page, along with brief mentions of Rod Bowers new place, The Citizen; haute hot dog joint, Buddha Dog; and chef Tony de Luca’s new Niagara-on-the-Lake spot, The Old Winery.
- James Chatto reveals the secrets of where Toronto’s top chefs eat when they’re off duty.
- Don Gillmor describes how a bowl of spaghetti in Venice changed his life.
- David Lawrason suggests trying something more subtle and refined than the typical big, boozy red wine to wash down your next BBQ meal.
- Signe Langford checks out the sweet ways that some local chefs are using honey.
- Rob Mifsud looks at how chef Andrea Nicholson at Sequel uses a post-modern take on a Jell-O mould salad in one of her inventive dishes. (This one isn’t online, although Rob describes the dish a bit more on his blog.)
- Also not online is Ryan Jennings’ preview of the upcoming Street Treats Fair, with the chefs from Perigee, Didier, Colborne Lane and Rain revealing what they’ll be serving up in Nathan Phillips Square on July 13th.
