Electronic musician Thomas Sinclair first gained notice as half of the electro-pop duo Black Turtleneck alongside Jason Amm (Solvent). He’s now working solo under the name Slap [unmodified], with an EP and album forthcoming on his own Architecture Of Sound label. We got a bit of his time to ask him what and where he likes to eat when he’s not making bleepy-bloopy robot music.

You’ve got $10 to buy lunch - where do you go?

Twice a month (that’s bi-weekly, right?), I have an appointment that brings me very close to College & Yonge where I go to Fran’s (20 College Street). Diner food may not be very exotic, but the menu and service is consistent. An old stand-by, and it’s the only place I can get a good club sandwich these days.

The budget’s unlimited, someone else is paying and the choice is yours - where do you pick for dinner?

Fressen (478 Queen Street West) - I’m living proof that you don’t have to be vegan to love the food here. One place where I can have almost anything on the menu and be very content. FYI - this is not the place to go if you’re in a hurry. The slow-paced service makes it ideal for a multi-course meal. Be sure you’re with someone you can carry on a long conversation with.

Tell us some of the food shops you frequent when buying groceries to cook for yourself.

Like many, I wind up being pressed for time and usually end up at one of the major grocery chains to stock my cupboards. When it comes to my sweet-tooth though, I make a point of frequenting Prague Deli (638 Queen Street West) for the best rum balls I’ve yet to find in the city. Do you choose the rum ball, with its cherry in the centre, or the rum tart, glazed in chocolate and garnished with a single macadamia nut? The answer: both.

When ordering in for a quiet night at home, what’s your favourite place for take-out or delivery?

At home is the only time that I have full knowledge and control of what goes into the food I’m eating - I wouldn’t want to sabotage that by ordering in. I’d have to be very lazy.

Oh, no, relatives are coming to Toronto from out of town - where do you take them?

I’m thankful that for the most part, my WASP family’s palate has evolved from ham, green peas and potatoes, and I can take them somewhere like New Generation Sushi (493 Bloor Street West) in the Annex (if the line-up isn’t too long). To appease my father though, we’ll have stop off at Harbord Fish & Chips (147 Harbord Street) afterwards for some ‘real English food’, which will coincidentally be prepared by the Asian couple that run it.

Your favourite place to grab a couple of drinks and hang out where everybody knows your name?

The Beaver Café (1192 Queen Street West), a small establishment with tons of interesting monthly events. Hip without being hipster, and Mill St. Organic on tap - enough said.

What’s coming up?

I’m performing Friday (June 15th) at the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street West) as part of CIUT’s 20th anniversary celebrations; gearing up for my new EP Auto [repeat] that comes out July 15th; enjoying summer while continuing to work on the forthcoming Slap [unmodified] album Diagnostic and Statistical Manual; and looking for female vocalist(s) to help me out.
