newsboy.jpgKathryn Borel has taken to creating new words over at Eye where she discusses the “unredefining” of the classic bistro and bistro fare. In doing so, she finds the plates presented by Chef Brad Long at Fare Bistro to be exactly what bistro fare should be.

Mercifully, Fare Bistro is exactly what it declares itself to be, in the more traditional sense. A restaurant whose food, wine list, serving acumen and décor deliver – for the most part – on its titular promise of the French ideal. (That said, those who are fans of sucking gelatinous blobs of goo out of a cloven hoof will be chagrined to note there are no pig trotters on the menu. You win some, you lose some.)

At NOW, Steven Davey does his annual pre-Pride look at some Church Street restaurants , and visits Mela where the food, although touted as “modern” Indian is pretty much your standard buffet, but the naan is so good, it wins our favourite critic over. Davey also compares the naan at Mela to the bread at Vela, across the street, while all the carb-counting denizens of Church and Wellesley no doubt look on in horror.

Davey also reviews Toko, a Church Street sushi-go-round place where the yakitori impresses but other items confuse and worry him.

However, Toko’s Viking Roll ($4.50) is another kettle of fish, an unlikely marriage of smoked salmon, barbecued freshwater eel, avocado, bacon and peanut butter. Why?

Also in NOW, Graham Duncan’s got a couple of reds above and below the $15 mark and a fine Scottish ale.

At Metro, Billy Munnelly is impressed by the wines from the Yellow Jersey brand, while Aonghus Kealy recommends Creemore Premium Lager for Father’s Day.

Father’s Day is the theme of the Metro food section today as well, with tips on planning a Father’s Day picnic, a recipe for picnic fried chicken, and recipes for serving Dad breakfast in bed.
