The Market Basket - Wednesday, June 6th

trinityberries.jpgYes, folks, that photo that you see is indeed the very first local strawberries of the year, courtesy of the booth at Plan B Organic Farms in the shiny and new Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market. Despite the chilly grey weather we all suffered through yesterday, summer is on its way.

I’ve got to say that I am totally impressed with the organization behind this new market. The choice of vendors is well-thought out, as all are complimentary. There is a great cross-section, so all the bases are covered - produce, meat, cheese, tea, coffee, flowers, and most importantly - snacks! There was a string trio playing in the centre of it all, and an information booth with helpful folks who had printed up info flyers complete with the cutest map ever to help people find all the vendors.

My market swag this week includes the aforementioned strawberries, plus a bouquet of wildflowers from Plan B Farms, asparagus and lettuce from Quinte Organic Farmer’s Co-op, cheese from the good folks at Monforte Dairy Co., bread and to-die-for rosemary lemonpepper shortbread from Alchemy Baking Co., and finally some really interesting and delicious wild leek pesto from Oso Leo.

trinityrhubarb.jpgThere was also coffee from Alternative Grounds, tea from Tealish, and tons of produce such as radishes, greens, rhubarb and more asparagus from a variety of vendors. The Local Cafe had a variety of snacks on offer such as squares, granola, tarts and cookies. And if you’re a carnivore, the folks at Twin Creeks Farm and Garden had not just vegetables but grass-fed meat.

The Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market runs Tuesdays until October 30th, rain or shine, from 3pm to 7pm. It’s at the northwest corner of the park near the intersection of Shaw and Dundas.

Want to show Toronto what YOU bought at the market? Send us a photo of your market swag and we’ll include it in our weekly post.

    Hi,
I have been looking forward to the start of this market..do a lot of shopping at Kensington; but was interested in also buying direct from farmers. Was I too late?? What string trio?? got there about 4:45… a few very cold people braving it out for the small number of us that came to shop. Did get some wonderful asparagus; no strawberries seen, snacks? and Twin Creeks was completely sold out. Do you know, will there be more vendors coming over the summer? And why do you never see fresh eggs at farmers markets?

    Hi Carol,

I was there just after 3pm, saw the “opening ceremony” by Pantalone.

There was a string trio (two violins and a bass) near the statue in the centre.

There also wasn’t a lot of strawberries, so I think they went pretty fast. The Local Cafe (next to Alternative Grounds) has cookies, granola, etc. Maybe they sold out?

Did you get a flyer with a map? It does show that Quinte Co-op will have eggs, but I didn’t see any yesterday. And yes, according to the map there will be a few more vendors who weren’t there yesterday, for a total of 14 altogether.

That’s great news about the eggs - I never see them at markets. I’m also glad to see meat making an appearance at this market. Between this one, Liberty Village and Dufferin Grove, I may be able to avoid Dominion almost entirely!
