In Search of the Late Night Nosh

Pop quiz hot shot. It’s 1am, and the club is lame, you just had four shots of Jack and you’re in for a hangover tomorrow. What do you do? What do you do?
We, the many and proud, of the megalopolis that is Toronto, know that we can get just about anything at anytime. And, all dirty thoughts aside, that means there is always some good food waiting to satisfy those late night cravings.
Living in this city for just over a year and a half now, I can honestly say that I have a list of regularly attended late night eateries approaching the thirties. Of course, I am of the opinion that going to a bar on the weekend is really just an excuse to go eat after. Most normal people tend to have a list of 5 or so restos that make up their last resort food fixes.
Both dine.to and toronto.com provide a good overview of the restaurant scene in T.O. I reference them both religiously to help satiate my eating habits (which, frightfully, make pregnancy cravings look tame).
So here are a few spots to keep in mind the next time you’re in post-club munchie mode.
Neon colours and a mixed-up 50’s revival thing aside, Fran’s is one of my 2 AM staples. When you’re craving pancakes there’s just no place like it. The recipe (supposedly the same from 1940) provides that perfect balance of fluffy to chewy. And, its no small miracle that they come cooked properly – I cant tell you how many times I’ve had pancakes come to the table tragically raw in the centre).
If a night of emo and screamo is on the agenda, Shanghai Cowgirl has got your back. Serving up some creative, and vegetarian friendly, diner fare, the tattooed staff are as much pieces of art as the paintings on the wall. The triple decker grilled cheese is blissfully crispy and perfect after a few too many drinks. The Cowgirl also whips up some pretty mean chili fries.
There are some nights when diner food just doesn’t do it for me (ok not many mind you, but they exist). Enter 2 very different, but wonderfully satisfying options. Burrito Boyz, the subterranean clubland foodie mecca, has the some most filling burritos I’ve ever come across. A small burrito feels like it weighs 3 pounds, and hell, it probably does. Packed with seasoned rice, beans, your choice of protein, and all the standard fillings, Burrito Boyz will make sure you don’t leave hungry – in fact you’ll probably won’t even need breakfast the next day. These are definitely my favourite burritos in town.
When the Orient is preferred to the Occident, there is New Generation Sushi. Even though the staff seems to be more Chinese than Japanese, the food has good take on the Japanese sensibility. For a real pick me up try an Umeshiso Maki – a sour plum and shiso leaf sushi roll with a tart kick to revive the senses (and I mean tart! It doubles as both an interesting snack and a really funny prank to play on obliviously drunk friends). New Gen also has all the great after drink standbys: tenpura, soba, udon and rice.
There are definitely more than a few other restaurants I could list here. But, what’s the fun in that? Go on, get your drink on and hit the town. Being a night owl has never been so tasty.
