There's a lot of beer and wine going on at The Star's food section this week as beer writer Josh Rubin discusses how the art of pairing food with beverages is actually easier (and better) with beer than with many wines. Rubin interviews beer expert Garret Oliver who was in town last week to do a tasting event at beer bistro and offers up the pairings Oliver did with chef Brian Morin, ten tips for pairing beer and food, and some additional tips to get you started. And because St. Patrick's Day is coming up Rubin also gives us the obligatory Guinness post.
Gordon Stimmell writes about springtime wines, while guest columnist Caitriona Cantillon describes what it's like to be a server whose job it is to push alcohol sales.
Susan Sampson reviews Terroir, the symposium that took place last week about restaurant service, and the discussion regarding whether "the customer is always right". She also reviews "Baking: From My Home to Yours" by Dorie Greenspan and writes about alternative cooking oils, and checks out Molten Gold hot sauce.
Elsewhere in The Star, Jennifer Bain offers up some quick and easy recipes, and Patricia Hluchy reviews Madras Palace in Richmond Hill.
There's more Guinness going on at The Sun (boy, I bet those Guinness marketing people all get well-deserved vacations at the beginning of April), as Rita DeMontis writes about how the beer is synonomous with St. Patrick's Day, and provides some recipes using the stout as an ingredient.
DeMontis also reviews the book "Dietitians of Canada Simply Great Food", while Elizabeth Baird cooks with cornmeal.
