Good review. Funny how opinions can vary... I love the Bier Markt for the exact reasons that Greg is critical of the environment. Personally I love having a great meal, which they always deliver, I love great International beers which they've always delivered during my visits(I've never been told something is out of stock...quite the opposite, I've been recommended beers that have just arrived and aren't yet listed), and most importantly, I love getting up from a great meal and wondering into an already roaring party! The fact that it's half great restaurant and half great party place makes it an ideal and effortless night out. That's the case on weekends, but I've been there mid-week and although it's very busy, it's not quite the same party atmosphere in the bar, much more "after work" happy hour type drinkers.

I know what you mean, Jeff. And I can't completely blame the Markt for what they are - with a place that size in that neighbourhood, they certainly can't depend on the beer geeks alone to keep them afloat. But if they can drag a portion of the party hearty crowd over to enjoying good beer, good for them, and good for the craft beer scene.

Hey Greg - you've summed up my thoughts on the Markt exactly. So much potential, so many inconsistent experiences. I'll always remember first coming up tot Toronto 8 years ago and spending most of my early 20's money here on the weekends and learning about new beers, but there simply is not reason to go back here any more for me. Not with Volo and Beer Bistro around. And that is despite the fact that it is an 8 minute walk away for me.

Site is looking great - congrats.

Suresh: I've been to several social events at the Markt, and have enjoyed it to a point. I just find it very loud, especially once the band starts playing - and it doesn't help that they have such awful bands, at least in my experience.

Vanessa: You really should try the food at Bier Markt some time, as it's quite good. Just go earlier in the week sometime, or maybe on a Sunday afternoon, to avoid the barfly contingent.

i entirely agree with you.... barring the fact, of course, that i haven't sat down and had a meal there ever. the appeal to me is beer (not really fond of cougars or men who will tell you you have a great walk) and often what i want is unavailable without much explanation. there's such potential for a beer-buff, but it often falls short and just becomes your usual outting in the financial district.

This is a great read and I love the details you've provided, particularly about the beers in house and their availability. Just wanted to mention that for those who prefer a good afterwork party, the bier market is a very popular spot on friday nights.
