The March, 2007 issue of Toronto Life is out now, and the lead feature in the This City section is a profile of chef Greg Couillard who is about to launch his latest venture, Spice Room & Chutney Bar, alongside chef David Ng’Ang’a’s Manyata Courtyard CafĂ© in Hazelton Lanes. The African-themed creations that Couillard will be serving up sound awesome, but we can’t help but wonder how much older he’ll have to be before writers stop referring to him as a “bad boy chef”.
Elsewhere in the issue:
- James Chatto tells us downtown types that we have to head out to the burbs for the best and most authentic Chinese food in the GTA.
- Chris Nuttall-Smith is out in the 905 as well, and reports back good things about Soontorn Bahn Thai in Oakville.
- David Lawrason raves about Ontario reds, and gives his top rating of the month to Le Clos Jordanne 2004 Pinot Noir Le Grand Clos from Niagara’s Twenty Mile Bench region.
- Liz Allemang digs up the dirt on the short life of molecular gastronomy hot-spot Fumetti.
- Jenny Koniuk is looking for the city’s best pierogies (am I the only ones with the pierogi song from Sesame Street stuck in my head after reading this article?).
- Charles Oberdorf compares the escargot at Amuse-Bouche and L’Escargot Bistro.
- Emma Waverman proves that last year’s pork popularity hasn’t died down with her look at Three Little Pigs, a dish of pork belly, loin and shoulder from Crush Wine Bar. Oink.
